Big Tractor and Hoist Maintenance - Making our Investment Pay

As we all know the tractor is working in a harsh environment that it was not designed for and as such it requires constant care. The combination of salt water and long periods of inactivity is taking a heavy toll on the rig, more than the engineering bosuns can possibly keep up with. The rate of deterioration has surprised us all.

The tractor and hoist have so many service points; the Bosun intends to form a small team of members with some mechanical knowledge to assist the bosun committee in maintaining them. Jim Ellul is coordinating the service schedule, so we can keep track of what has been done. When the list is prepared, take a look as you may be able to help.

We would also like the tractor and hoist washed down after use. Boat owners should consider their responsibility to the club if they are hoisted outside of the launch and recovery weekends. It will help to slow the rust and rot. It is not the driver's job!

We plan to run the tractor and rig far more regularly to keep everything in fine fettle. A bit more use should keep everything moving.

Taking on a service task will be recognised as club maintenance. If you have the necessary skills and would like to play with the "Tonka Toys", see the Bosun for more details. If you are approached by the one of the bosuns, please take their compliment and offer your support!

Many thanks from the Bosuns

End of Season Get Together

Held on Wednesday 15th October

The cadets were awarded their trophies following a successful seasons sailing which saw our younger club members sail down the harbour to Locks Regatta and come back with a large haul of silverware.

Congratulations to following cadets from TSC who filled the 5 out of the top 6 in the Slow Handicap,

Jack Rivington

Oliver Kinsley

Max Matthews

Guy Rivington

Vanessa Kinsley

Congratulations also to Aiden Boyce who won in the Laser class.

Thanks go to Paul and all the volunteers who make the Cadet evenings possible, the quality of teaching is clearly demonstrated by Aiden, Vanessa, & Oliver who regularly race against the more experienced members of the club – often beating them!

The galley team for the evening of Anita Boyce & helpers cooked up a fantastic curry which was enjoyed along with a few beers by the adults later in the evening, this was followed by one of Linda Vacher’s fiendishly hard nautical quizzes, one question of which was impossible to answer! Linda has promised to make it easier next year, even though the quiz was tricky a great evening was had by all.

Dutyman Online Reminder & Swap System

The dutyman online rosta is a tool that we use to facilitate online duty swaps and reminders to take the hassle out of phoning around to remind members of their duties, and to enable yourselves to quickly and easily swap any duties you may be unable to do. Like everything else at the club it is run and maintained by volunteers who are human beings (and occasionally make mistakes)

The club calendar that you receive with your membership is the guide by which you should go by as to which duties have been allocated to you - the only time that would change is if you have swapped with another member. If there are any anomalies then please inform the dutyman administrator as soon as you spot them. Should you have lost your calendar (or the dog has eaten it etc etc) drop me a line to webmaster_tsc@tudorsailing.org.uk and I will send you an electronic copy.

Regards

Hannah Barnes

Webmaster & Dutyman administrator

Tudor Sailing Club Memories

Gordon Johnson kindly reproduced some articles from the early days of Tudor Sailing Club a few years ago, which were not published at the time. After sorting through some old TSC paperwork we came across the documents and have uploaded them to share with the wider TSC community.

These are four cuttings I have from the Portsmouth Evening News in the years 1948 to 1950. The club received unqualified support from the paper and in particular Spinnaker this support of course encouraged the Councillors.

The pictures attached to the Those Dismal Jimmies were taken near the TSC on the Eastern Road during trials to see if we could carry out a series of capsizes at Portsbridge in front of the public and the news photographer. On the day I capsized three times in succession and as Spinnaker said no water was taken in. This was done to help silence critics of our " Amateur Boat Building". The pictures in Spinnakers article will not reproduce.

Some pictures show C657 a white boat with C191 a brown (varnished) boats sails Keith Linder loaned me his sails after I came off worst when rounding a marker mine were with Lucas the sailmaker!

Many of the Cadets crossed to the Isle of Wight and raced of Southsea

Bosuns Update

To All dinghy and cruiser owners, would you please make sure that all plaques are in place on your boats and that they are visible to the bosuns committee.

All road trailers standing upright against the fence line need to come down and be placed under dinghies for  security reasons. Failure to do this will incur a charge to the owner.
As most of you are aware,  brambles are growing through the fence line. Those affected by the brambles, please be reminded that it's your duty to cut them back,  both for the sake of your boat and for the welfare of yourself when trying to remove your boat.

Can the bosuns remind all boat owners that drain plugs should be installed in their tenders to drain of rain water  (This is a bylaw). It also saves your tender from being damaged by someone that can't be bothered to drain the water out when it comes to moving it.

Finally,

Have a great sailing season......

The Bosun
