SAILING INSTRUCTIONS FOR DINGHIES AND CRUISERS

1 RULES
Races will be governed by the ISAF Racing Rules of Sailing 2005 – 2008, the prescriptions of the Royal Yachting Association, the Racing Charter, the rules of each class concerned and by these sailing instructions.

2 ADDITIONS OR CHANGES TO SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
Any additions or changes to these sailing instructions will be posted on the Race Notice Board and indicated by Flag ‘L’ displayed on the Club flag pole.

3 SAFETY
All Competitors - The race organisers shall not be liable for any loss, damage, death or personal injury howsoever caused to the owner/competitor or crew, as a result of their taking part in the race or races. Moreover, every owner/competitor warrants the suitability of their boat for the race or races.
Dinghies Only - It shall be the individual responsibility of each competitor to wear adequate personal buoyancy when conditions warrant. When Flag 'Y' is displayed before or with the warning signal,
adequate personal buoyancy shall be worn while racing by all competitors. A wet suit or dry suit is not adequate personal buoyancy.

4 ENTRIES
Cruisers should sign on for each race; this may be done via VHF ch37 (call sign Tudor Base). Registration for the dinghy regatta automatically enters a boat for all races.

5 DECLARATIONS AND RETIREMENTS
Declarations are not required, but competitors who retire from a race must indicate this on the retirement sheet, or by VHF ch37, or by telephone (023 9266 2002), or by informing a patrol boat.

6 COURSES
Dinghies – The course to be sailed by each class for each race will be described on the Race Notice Board. Courses may be different for each race.
Cruisers – The course to be sailed will be selected from the Tudor Sailing Club 2005 Cruiser Course Sheet. The course letter will be displayed from the Race Box before the warning signal. The course letter may also be broadcast on VHF ch37 shortly after the warning signal.

7 START PROCEDURE
Racing rule 26 shall apply. The following sequence shall be used:
Signal Flag Sound Minutes Before Start
Warning Class Flag Up 1 sound 5
Preparatory Flag P up 1 sound 4
One Minute Flag P down 1 long sound 1
Start Class Flag down 1 sound 0

8 START LINE
COMPETITORS MUST KEEP CLEAR OF THE START LINE WHILE OTHER CLASSES ARE STARTING, AND MUST KEEP CLEAR OF THE FINISH LINE AFTER FINISHING
Club Line: The line is the extension of a line through the centres of two orange triangles in front of the
club house. There is an outer distance mark, a post with an ‘X’ top mark, at the Eastern end of the line. There will be an inner distance mark, a pink buoy, at the western end of the line. These marks may not
lie exactly on the line. Boats must pass between the outer and inner distance marks when starting.

9 FINISH LINE
As Club Line. Boats must finish west of the outer distance mark. The inner distance mark will not apply.

10 RECALLS
Individual recalls will be signaled in accordance with racing rule 29.1 (Flag 'X' and one sound signal).

General recalls will be signaled in accordance with racing rule 29.2 (Flag 'First Substitute' and two
sound signals; all other starting flags will be lowered. First Substitute will be lowered with one sound
signal and a new preparatory signal made one minute later). The Class Flag and Flag ‘P’ will be displayed together, as well as the class flag of the next class to start, if any.

Racing rule 30 (starting penalties) shall not apply

11 TIME LIMIT
For all classes, the time limit for the leading boat in each race is 3 hours. If one boat finishes within the time limit, all boats that finish shall be scored according to their finishing places unless the race is abandoned. If no boat finishes within the time limit, the race officer shall abandon the race.

12 SHORTENING COURSE OR ABANDONING A RACE

The Race Officer may abandon the race (Flag ‘N’, ‘N’ over ‘H’, ‘N’ over ‘A’, with 3 sounds) or shorten the course (Flag ‘S’ with 2 sounds) as appropriate. When Flag 'S' is flown from the club flagpole this indicates that the leading boat will finish when it next crosses the finish line in the same direction as the start.

13 PROTESTS
Protests must be lodged with the race officer within one hour of the last boat finishing.

14 SCORING
Dinghies Only - Scoring will be in accordance with Appendix A (Low Point System). One race shall be completed to constitute a valid series. Each boat’s score will be the total of her race scores, with her
worst score discarded if all 3 scheduled races are completed. Each boat / helm / handicap number combination will be treated as a separate entry for scoring.
