Rear wheel drive, air-cooled 499cc 2 cylinder 4 stroke engine with 18bhp
The FIAT 500 was introduced in 1957 as the Nuova Cinquecento, or New 500. The New 500, with a 479 cc two cylinder air cooled engine at the rear was fundamentally an economy car. In 1960 a larger engine of 499cc was fitted, and the word "New" dropped from the model name, which then became 500D. By 1965 modifications incorporated into the design deserved reclassification again, to 500F. In 1969 the standard F model was supplemented by a more fully equipped version, the 500L (luxury!)
This little car, affectionately known as ‘Noddy’ has been in my family since new and was first registered by my Great Grandmother in 1970. The car has since been passed down through four generations. I have found memories of the car as a child; which was stored in my Grandads garage.
Noddy was on the road until the early eighties, when she was put into storage in my Granddads garage. My uncle then resurrected her in 1987 following a succession of accidents in other cars which had left him needing a cheap car that he could afford to insure! He used the car regularly up until 1989, when it failed an MOT and was once again put into storage.
By the mid nineties the car was in need of a new home, and as a teenager who was looking for his first set of wheels, I convinced my family to let me get her back on the road. The car actually required serious restoration and as a poor student the project got shelved until I had the funds to make her good.
The project took 3 years of hard graft to complete, and I finally got her back on the road in September 2007. Since then she has completed over 6000 miles of classic motoring bringing smiles to the faces of many people who see her.
